How do I track Universal Analytics events through Google Tag Manager?

How do I track Universal Analytics events through Google Tag Manager?

I wish did fix the issue. You have to add something in the admin panel, else this will not work.
"Event" in the dataLayer means something different than event tracking in GA - Google choose to confuse the heck out of everybody by using the same name for pretty much unrelated concepts (that those share the name with javascript events does not make things any easier).

wish help you to fix your issue OK found it.
The event value MUST be a number and it cannot be empty if it exists.

it fixes the issue Looks good. You can check in Real-Time reports to see immediately if the event is tracking (assuming you are not filtering out your own visits). Make sure the all onclick code comes after the GA snippet. You can also consider using GTM to tag all your links if they are all different, in case you have more links to add in the future.

Does that help ga.js does not support this type of communication with analytics.js, so what you're asking to do is just not possible without a lot of hacking or manual implementation on their part, which would be a total waste of time since it'll be much easier for them to just upgrade their implementation to analytics.js and then use the officially supported Linker plugin to get out of-the-box, cross-domain tracking.

To fix this issue I created a new "custom html" tag in Tag Manager. Then I added the analytics.js code below and set the tag to fire on page load. This allowed me to use the existing ga calls in my code to fire custom events rather than re-writing all of my events to work with Universal Analytics through the dataLayer as the other answer suggested.
code :
<!-- Google Analytics -->
<script>
    window.ga=window.ga||function(){(ga.q=ga.q||[]).push(arguments)};ga.l=+new Date;
    ga('create', 'UA-XXXXXXXXX-Y', 'auto');
</script>
<script async src='https://www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js'></script>
<!-- End Google Analytics -->
