Python: comparing list to a string

Does that help I want to know how to compare a string to a list. For example I have string 'abcdab' and a list ['ab','bcd','da']. Is there any way to compare all possible list combinations to the string, and avoid overlaping elements. so that output will be a list of tuples like [('ab','da'),('bcd'),('bcd','ab'),('ab','ab'),('ab'),('da')]. , This little recursive function should do the job:
code :
def matches(string, words, start=-1):
    result= []
    for word in words: # for each word
        pos= start
        while True:
            pos= string.find(word, pos+1) # find the next occurence of the word
            if pos==-1: # if there are no more occurences, continue with the next word

            if [word] not in result: # add the word to the result

            # recursively scan the rest of the string
            for match in matches(string, words, pos+len(word)-1):
                match= [word]+match
                if match not in result:
    return result
>>> print matches('abcdab', ['ab','bcd','da'])
[['ab'], ['ab', 'ab'], ['ab', 'da'], ['bcd'], ['bcd', 'ab'], ['da']]

I wish this help you This finds all substrings of length 5 that are repeated at least 4 or more times (not overlapping) within 50 characters. The resulting list does not have duplicates.
code :
b = 5      #length of substring
c = 50     #length of window
repeat = 4 #minimum number of repetitions

substrings = list({
    for i in range(len(a_str) - b)
    if a_str.count(a_str[i:i+b], i+b, i+c) >= repeat - 1
