what is the easiest way to filter articles in liferay theme

I wish this helpful for you In your theme's resources, there is a portlet.vm template available in the _diffs/template directory. This template allows you to override the default presentation of portlets in general (e.g. change the configuration icons, remove the title bar, ...).
However, inside portlet.vm Liferay injects a predefined variable called $portletDisplay. This is an instance of the com.liferay.portal.theme.PortletDisplay class and represents the portlet that is currently printed.
code :
#if($portletDisplay.portletName == '56')
<div class="portlet" ...>
    ...
</div>
#end

it helps some times Edit to original answer: Even though this is answer (as of the time of this comment) is the selected answer, the original version of this answer is outdated.
I'm adding an update here to help others avoid getting sidetracked by this answer like I did.
code :
> { one: 1, two: 2, three: 3 }.slice(:one, :two)
=> {:one=>1, :two=>2}
choices = params.select { |key, value| key.to_s.match(/^choice\d+/) }
params.delete_if { |key, value| !key.to_s.match(/choice\d+/) }
params.keys.select { |key| key.to_s.match(/^choice\d+/) }

will be helpful for those in need Let's say I have the following doc , Use linq-to-xml, the following code:
code :
var xml_str = @"<sets version=""2.0"">
  <setting>
    <id>set1</id>
    <value>80</value>
    <label>EVersion</label>
    <type>Val</type>
    <format>R</format>
    <bits>
      <addr>0</addr>
      <startBit>0</startBit>
      <bitWidth>8</bitWidth>
    </bits>
  </setting>
  <setting>
    <id>set3</id>
    <value>50</value>
    <label>GVersion</label>
    <type>Bin</type>
    <format>R</format>
    <bits>
      <addr>0</addr>
      <startBit>0</startBit>
      <bitWidth>8</bitWidth>
    </bits>
  </setting>
  </sets>";

var doc = XDocument.Parse(xml_str);

var settings = new XElement("sets",
    from setting in doc.Element("sets").Elements("setting")
    select new XElement("setting", setting.Element("id"), setting.Element("value")));

Console.WriteLine(settings);
<sets>
  <setting>
    <id>set1</id>
    <value>80</value>
  </setting>
  <setting>
    <id>set3</id>
    <value>50</value>
  </setting>
</sets>
var doc = XDocument.Parse(xml_str);
var settings_dict = doc.Element("sets").Elements("setting").ToDictionary(s => s.Element("id").Value, s => Convert.ToInt32(s.Element("value").Value));

this will help If you are using Java 8 you could simply use myList.stream().filter(); Otherwise you could adopt the Filter Pattern.
code :
public abstract class Filter<T> {
public abstract boolean passes(T object);
public Iterator<T> filter(Iterator<T> iterator) {
return new FilterIterator(iterator);
  }
  public Iterable<T> filter(Iterable<T> iterable) {
  return new Iterable<T>() {
  public Iterator<T> iterator() {
    return filter(iterable.iterator());
    }
  };
 }
private class FilterIterator implements Iterator<T> {
private Iterator<T> iterator;
private T next;
private FilterIterator(Iterator<T> iterator) {
  this.iterator = iterator;
  toNext();
}
public boolean hasNext() {
  return next != null;
}
public T next() {
  if (next == null)
    throw new NoSuchElementException();
  T returnValue = next;
  toNext();
  return returnValue;
}
public void remove() {
  throw new UnsupportedOperationException();
}
private void toNext() {
  next = null;
  while (iterator.hasNext()) {
    T item = iterator.next();
    if (item != null && passes(item)) {
      next = item;
      break;
    }
  }
}
}
}

help you fix your problem I'm not the best with regex, but here's a working solution for your example:
code :
String s = "Level I (10/20)";

Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile("\\(\\d+/(\\d+)\\)");
Matcher matcher = pattern.matcher(s);

if (matcher.find()) {
    System.out.println(matcher.group(1));
}
