I wish did fix the issue. In the case where PASSES is 100, you have chunk = 10485.
The allocations you are doing are
code :
 i+1      size
  1      10485
  2      20970
  3      31455
 ...      ...
 100   1048500
100 * 101 / 2 = 5050
5050 * 10485 = 52,949,250
(1024 * 1025 / 2) * 1024 = 537,395,200

should help you out You need to make GeneralMatrix's destructor virtual, otherwise you won't be able to properly delete derived objects through a base pointer.
Don't confuse pointers & references and dynamic allocation. You can very well use a pointer or a reference to a static or automatic object. "Polymorphism only works with pointers and references" isn't about the lifetime of the object, but the way of handling it. See that example : http://ideone.com/qmywMk
code :
#include <iostream>
struct Base {
    virtual void sayHi() {
        std::cout << "Hi from Base!\n";
    }

    virtual ~Base() {}
};

struct Derived : Base {
    virtual void sayHi() {
        std::cout << "Hi from Derived!\n";
    }
};

void sayHelloToMyValue(Base o) {
    o.sayHi();
}

void sayHelloToMyReference(Base &o) {
    o.sayHi();
}

void sayHelloToMyPointer(Base *o) {
    o->sayHi();
}

int main(int, char**) {
    Derived d; // No dynamic allocation!
    Base &base = d;

    sayHelloToMyValue(base);
    sayHelloToMyReference(base);
    sayHelloToMyPointer(&base);

    return 0;
}

should help you out valgrind tools such as memcheck or helgrind use a lot of memory for tracking various aspects of your program. So, it is normal that top shows a lot more memory than what your program allocates itself.
If you want to have an idea about the memory used by valgrind, you can do:
code :
valgrind --stats=yes ...

will help you I does report the issue, but to see it you need to run Valgrind with --leak-check=full --show-leak-kinds=all options:
code :
$ valgrind --leak-check=full --show-leak-kinds=all ./a.out
