Any of those help json_encode expects all content that you're encoding to be valid UTF-8. If any part of the content isn't proper UTF-8, json_encode will fail silently for that part (b

it fixes the issue I bet you are retrieving data in non-utf8 encoding: try to put mysql_query('SET CHARACTER SET utf8') before your SELECT query.

may help you . As I mentioned, you should not be using the ext/mysql extension for new code. Until it is purged from all those ancient PHP tutorials on the internet, we wont see the end of people going "Why doesn't my code work any more", because using it throws E_DEPRECATED in PHP 5.5, and it will be removed completely in later versions.
This uses the mysqli extension, with prepared queries (you can also use PDO).
code :
$db = new mysqli($dbip, $dbuser, $dbpass, $dbname);

if ($query = $db->prepare("INSERT INTO table_name (x, y) values (?, ?)")) {
    $query->bind_param("ss", $_POST["x"], $_POST["y"]); // s = string, i = int
    $query->execute();
} else {
    echo json_encode(array("error" => "malformed query"));
    return false;
    // in PHP, false or null both signify an error in a non-boolean context
}
echo json_encode(array("success" => "query attempted"));
return true;
json_encode(array("query attempted")); // ["success"]
json_encode(array("success" => "more info")); // {"success":"more info"}
json_encode(utf8_encode(array("success" => "more info"))); // null
. $_POST[NewLocation] .

To fix this issue (More a comment that an answer, but I need more space).
The braces in the expression, that Sverri mentions do nothing and are just confusing. Just leave them out.
code :
if (!$fileinfo->isFile()) continue;{
$files[] .= $pathname;
}
if (!$fileinfo->isFile()) continue;
$files[] = $pathname;

will be helpful for those in need You will get null returned by json_encode if your array values are not encoded to utf8 (so they are not safe for json_encode)
if you get your data from a db try using:
