code :
p "aabbcbb".chars.chunk{|c| c}.map{|c, a| [c, a.size]}
# => [["a", 2], ["b", 2], ["c", 1], ["b", 2]]

help you fix your problem I want to encode a string in Ruby such that output should be in pairs so that I could decode it. I want to encode in such a way that each pair contains the next distinct letter in the string, and the number consecutive repeats.
code :
"aaabbcbbaaa".scan(/((.)\2*)/).map{|s, c| [c, s.length]}

fixed the issue. Will look into that further Following examples on other Stackoverflow posts related to word frequency analysis in Python, my program is returning letter frequency analysis and not actually the word.
code :
Counter(contents.split())
I need to count letter frequency and save the letter and it's freq as variable

Does that help the file input I get looks like this. , You're very close:
code :
import collections

def readFile(filename):
    with open(filename) as infile:
        counts = collections.Counter(char for line in infile for char in line)
    symObjList = []
    for nuc in "ATCG":
        symObjList.append(SymbolObject(nuc, counts[nuc], ""))
        print(nuc, "appears", counts[nuc], "times")

    return {k:counts[k] for k in "ATCG"}, symObjList

around this issue Here is an example to help you get started. https://iconoun.com/demo/temp_user.php
code :
<?php // demo/temp_user.php
/**
 * Substrings and character counts
 *
 * https://stackoverflow.com/questions/45421608/count-each-letter-in-a-string-and-letter-frequency-is-greater-than-2-then-remove
 */
error_reporting(E_ALL);
echo '<pre>';

// ORIGINAL TEST DATA
$str = "have a wonderful day for entirely different people,sss greeetings";

// NORMALIZE COMMA TO MATCH BLANK SEPARATORS
$str = str_replace(',', ' ', $str);

// AN ARRAY OF WORDS
$arr = explode(' ', $str);

// EXAMINE EACH WORD, REMOVE THOSE WITH MORE THAN TWO DUPLICATED LETTERS
foreach ($arr as $key => $wrd)
{
    $cca = count_chars($wrd, 1);
    foreach ($cca as $chr)
    {
        if ($chr > 2) unset($arr[$key]);
    }
}

// RECONSTRUCT
$new = implode(' ', $arr);

// SHOW THE WORK PRODUCT
echo PHP_EOL . $str;
echo PHP_EOL . $new;

help you fix your problem I'm currently trying to find a regex to match a specific use case and I'm not finding any specific way to achieve it. I would like, as the title says, to match if a word starts and end with a letter, contains only letter and those characters: "\ *- \'" . It should also have no more than one consecutive non-letter. , You may use
code :
^[a-zA-Z]+(?:[ *'-][a-zA-Z]+)*$
