With these it helps I have a string: , I checked it, this should work:
code :
$strings = ['', ' ', ' ', 's', 's ', ' s'];

foreach ($strings as $string)
    $string = trim(str_replace(' ', ' ', $string));

    if (strlen($string) != 0)
        echo $string . ' is not empty';
        echo $string . ' is empty';

    echo '<br>';
is empty
is empty
is empty
s is not empty
s is not empty
s is not empty

Does that help You could (should?) implement an __isset() method. The manual on empty() says:
How to check if variable (usually text) Is not defined or empty, if variable is empty uses other variable

I think the issue was by ths following , Script A imports all variables from B script; the problem is script B, I do not know if exist or is empty the variable as I need. Case not exist variable in B, then I use my variable in script A. case it exist in A use my variable B; or it exist in A and B then use for default variable in B. , In BASH you can do this:
code :
Show &nbsp if value empty

Show &nbsp if value empty

I wish did fix the issue. What you have should work. You are missing a closing } and have one in the middle of the expression that needs to be removed.
Here is a demo showing your solution working and an ng-if. http://plnkr.co/edit/UR7cLbi6GeqVYZOauAHZ?p=info
code :
<td class="licnum" ng-if="participant.LicenseNumber">{{participant.LicenseNumber}}</td>
<td class="licnum" ng-if="!participant.LicenseNumber">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="licnum"><span ng-if="participant.LicenseNumber">{{participant.LicenseNumber}}</span><span ng-if="!participant.LicenseNumber">&nbsp;</span></td>

it fixes the issue Working on a strange one today - A client will be pasting in a load of text to an HTML editor which adds many non breaking spaces. I need to style this when output to the browser. , You could try
code :
<span class="right">\1</span>
variable undefined after isset check, empty check and initalization

I wish this help you Your isset isn't being evaluated as php, only modalResponse is. It is because everything in the double quotes that is not a php variable name is treated as a string.
To evaluate the statement as PHP, try something like:
code :
 <script src='index.js'></script>
 ". if (isset($modalResponse)) {
        echo $modalResponse;
 } . "
