I wish this help you According to the convention of Grunt configuration, "vendor" and "client" are targets. Their names are not defined by grunt or grunt-browserify. You can create as many targets as you want and give them the names you like. Each target has files configuration, which is common in most of Grunt tasks, such as src and dest, and options configuration, which is plugin specific. "dist" is another example of targets and "preBundleCB" is a property of grunt-browserify's options.
You can individually invoke the targets with grunt browserify:vendor and grunt browserify:client. And grunt browserify invokes all targets of browserify task, which are "vendor" and "client" in this example.

Difficulty getting browserify-shim working with grunt-browserify (> 2.0.2) as transform

like below fixes the issue Just an update for posterity's sake: I ended up ditching grunt-browserify and just using browserify-shim with browserify from the command-line. It works instantly with no issues at all.
I've come to the belief that the combination of the three libs (browserify, grunt-browserify, and browserify-shim) are all simply being updated and changed too rapidly to be able to rely upon them working together as they're updated. Ditching the grunt component makes the remaining two much easier to manage.

wish of those help I pretty new to most all of these tools (grunt, browserify, handlebars). I setup gruntfile.js to watch for saves on a few .js files and then run the default browserify bundle command on them automatically. Here is my current gruntfile.js: , If you want to use hbsfy from Grunt, use some config like this:
code :
browserify: {
    js: {
        src: ['responsive-tables.js','tvguide.js','tmpl/**/*.handlebars'],
        dest: 'bundle.js'
    },
    options: {
        transform: ['hbsfy']
    }
}
