seems to work fine I fixed this problem by reinstalling the JRE, JDK and created a completely new installation of eclipse. Apparently the old eclipse was still linked to some leftovers from a Java 7 JDK.

hop of those help? Best Practices
Ideally, one shouldn't have any <% // scriptlet %> blocks in JSPs any more.
code :
 <jsp:useBean id="user" class="foo.User" /> <!-- scope="page" by default -->
<% // in Title.jsp
  request.setAttribute ("user", new User());

<% // in Header.jsp
  User user = request.getAttribute ("user");
  user.setName ("John Doe");

I think the issue was by ths following , the variables "alen" and "blen" you declared in main() are method-local, that means they are not accessible from printMatrix() method. Make them fields instead by writing:
code :
private int alen;
private int blen;

Does that help The problem is you are missing the variable name when instancing the game:
code :
public class GameLauncher{
    public static void main(String[] args){
        GuessGame game= new GuessGame(); //game is the variable

like below fixes the issue You are trying to assign result to the value of searchedFor in your search method, through invoking equals, which actually return boolean if x equals argument.
Use = to assign instead.
