it fixes the issue What you have in the second example is what's called a named function expression.
Its name is not added to the containing scope, but is accessible within the scope of the function itself:
code :
var a = function x() {
  alert(x);
};
a();
var myFavoriteFunctions = {
    factorial: function f(n) {
        return n === 1 ? 1 : n * f(n);
    },
    identity: function (v) { return v; }
};

console.log(myFavoriteFunctions.factorial(10));

help you fix your problem In this tutorial, there is code for a Person class. Are you able to explain to me the purpose of line 21/27? I understand concepts like $_ and @_, and I know my is used for declaring local references, but I don't understand those lines in this code context.
code :
20 sub setFirstName {
21    my ( $self, $firstName ) = @_;
$person->setFirstName('jeeves');

wish help you to fix your issue Global variables can contain any data type. The first shown code is likely not working because the document isn't loaded when you fetch the value for element, while the second code is working because the document is loaded by the time check() is called.
If you want to use global variables, try this:
code :
var element;
var test = "Changed!";

window.onload = function() {
    element = window.document.getElementById("subtitle");
    check();
}

it fixes the issue The problem is that you have used the same name for the member method and member variable in the first example, but different names in the second.

should help you out These are function declarations. There are two things I'd consider bad about them:
code :
list *search_list(list *, item_type), *predecessor_list(list *, item_type);
list *search_list(list *, item_type);
list *predecessor_list(list *, item_type);

void delete_list (list **l, item_type x)
{
    ...
}
