wish of those help I completely agree with "Jungtaek Lim" (above answer).
Apache Storm in HDP 2.5 is actually not same as official Apache Storm 1.0.1 since it pulled more patches from the next versions (not released yet).

seems to work fine In my opinion, there is no easy way to determine which version update is "save".
Even if you would check that all classes you compile against still exist, method signatures might have changed. And even if all the method signatures stay the same, the behaviour might have changed, leading to runtime exception etc.

seems to work fine Akka STM was deprecated a few years ago, as it was deemed unfit for distributed systems. For the reasoning, see this article by Roland Kuhn about the decision to drop it.
Roland mentions Agents in his posting, but please note that they are also deprecated.

This might help you You should make sure you are using the latest versions plugin (2.3). I believe 2.3 fixed some issues (that being said it is still an incredibly buggy plugin).
The other issue I have found with the version plugin is combining with other version goals or even other maven goals. Don't do that. For example your code above you are running versions:use-latest-versions versions:update-properties at the same time. Instead execute mvn once for each one of those goal. Yes this is a pain and slows down the build process but I found it far more reliable particularly if you use versions:update-parent (2.3 may have fixed these issues though).
