will help you You have a showrefs function in your Show model somewhere that is defining this relationship. @Armon's answer will work, but will run on the order of O(n * years) where years is the number of years you want to show. Your example only has 2, but could be many more, and you can instead display your data in O(n) time.
You can orderBy in the methods defining relationships.:
code :
// app/models/Show.php
public function showrefs()
{
    return $this->hasMany('ShowRef')->orderBy('show_start_date', 'DESC');
}
->orderBy('`show_refs`.`show_start_date`', 'DESC')
$show = Show::where('show_slug','=',$id)->with('showrefs')->firstOrFail();
$currentYear = '';
foreach($show->showrefs as $showref) {
    $showRefYear = strtok($showref->show_start_date, '-');
    if($currentYear != $showRefYear) {
        $currentYear = $showRefYear;
        // Output Year heading
    }

    // Output show details
}

it fixes the issue You are not injecting $question into your callback function. You need to use the use keyword:
code :
if(!$question = Question::where('id', $question['id'])->where(function($query) use ($question) { $query-  >where('updated_at','<', $question['updated']); })->first()) {

I wish this help you I'm in a controller for Laravel 5.2 and am trying to iterate through an eloquent collection of invoice_items, which would translate to something like order items. So, the invoice would act as the order, have it's ordered items (invoice_item), and the invoice_items would list all of the products ordered (product). , Change your queries to:
code :
$invoice = Invoice::where('id', $id)->get();
$invoice_items = Invoice_item::where('invoice_id', $invoice[0]->id)->get();

$contact = Contact::where('id', $invoice[0]->contact_id)->get();

foreach($invoice_items as $item) {
    $products = Product::where('id', $item->product_id)->get();
}
public function items()
{
  $this->hasOne('Items');
}
return $invoice_items->items;
$invoice = Invoice::where('id', $id)->get();
$invoice_items = Invoice_item::where('invoice_id', $invoice[0]->id)->get()->lists('product_id');

$contact = Contact::where('id', $invoice[0]->contact_id)->get();

$products = Product::whereIn('id', $invoice_items)->get();

I hope this helps . Rather than creating two queries and attempting to combine their results in the view, have you tried performing a join in a single query? Making certain assumptions about your column names and leaving aside the pagination, the actual SQL would be something akin to:
code :
SELECT contenttype.*, count(content.id) FROM contenttype LEFT JOIN content ON contenttype.id = content.type GROUP BY contenttype.label ORDER BY contenttype.label ASC;

hop of those help? I am using eloquent query to filter data. My query is like this and it is working perfectly for now. , If I understand you right you can do like this:
code :
$search = request('search', []);
$users = User::query();

foreach($search as $field=>$value)
{
    $users = $users->where($field,'LIKE','%'.$value.'%');
}

$users = $users->SimplePaginate(15);
