seems to work fine There is no way for a process to anticipate the fact a memory access will fail due to virtual memory shortage, especially with the mmaped sparse file technique you are using.
You might trap the sigsegv but there are issues with this approach (see Segmentation fault handling ). Otherwise, the simpler solution would be to monitor the file system available space and freeze/stop the most consuming process preventively.

Hope that helps My C++ is very rusty, but assuming that no operator overloading is happening, doesn't

wish of those help When I try to run my code, it causes segmentation fault on malloc on 89th line with "s1 = malloc(65536);" which persist even if I change it to calloc or realloc and also it causes this to be written if I have my function to free memory on line 82 or 86: , Consider one of your first tests with s_strcat():
code :
    s_init(&ss1, NULL, 8);
    s_strcat(&ss1, &ss3);
   if(array == NULL) {
        str->length = num;

        if(num != 0)
            str->string = malloc(num);
    for(i = destination->length, j = 0; j < source->length; i++, j++)
        destination->string[i] = source->string[j];
    for(i = 0; i < source->length; i++)
        destination->string[i + destination->length] = source->string[i];

it helps some times I don't know if it's the only error, but is an error.
You define each_day::mov_avg of size 1
code :
float mov_avg[1];
day[dayNumber].mov_avg[mv_num] = 0; //ERROR HERE? (yes, when mv_num == 1)
[...]
day[dayNumber].mov_avg[mv_num] = sum_of_elems / smaSize;
[...]
day[dayNumber].mov_avg[mv_num] = sum_of_elems / smaSize;
[...]
if (day[dayNumber].mov_avg[1] != 0) {
    if (day[dayNumber].mov_avg[0] < day[dayNumber].mov_avg[1] && holdingLong == true) {
[...]
float mov_avg[2];

around this issue The segmentation fault is because LABELX is not aligned to a 16 byte address.
Define LABELX using the following:
code :
.local LABELX
.comm LABELX, 16, 16

This might help you Errors in freeing memory are generally caused by freeing the same pointer twice (not likely here), freeing an invalid pointer, or a previous buffer underrun (of the same block) or overrun (the block before it) causing administrative data to become corrupted. Since you say it happens with large files as input rather than small, you're most likely overrunning a buffer.
It looks like you're overrunning one_seq[] by iterating between 0 and length, when you allocate only lines elements.
