I think the issue was by ths following , I found out that the menus were linked to the macros only. The macroes were removed, but the menus weren't.
Just clicked with the right button and removed the menus, that solved the issue. It doesn't seem to have any macro anymore.

I wish did fix the issue. What you're seeing is called VSTO (Visual Studio Tools for Office). It's a way to create and manage client-instantied add-ins, templates and documents (or, as some do, just control the client for particular operations). It comes with a lot of overhead.
It sounds like what you want instead is the Open XML SDK 2.0. This will give full access to creating Word (and other Office) documents without any need for the Word client or the VSTO requirements (VSTO runtime, Primary Interops, etc.) for the program or on the OS that is creating them. There is a great deal of information out there on the OpenXML SDK - a good starting point is http://www.openxmldeveloper.org. Another, is How-To videos.

I hope this helps you . You could you use the IFilter plugins to let you retrieve the contents of the documents and then index them. The interface is originally part of Microsoft Index Service but is generally available for indexing documents.
I looked into the technology a couple of years ago and seem to remember that either the filters for Office documents were built into Windows or could be installed separately from the complete Office package but I may be wrong here.

Hope that helps I ran your code locally, with just some minor edits for improved tracing and timing, and it "only" took 13.73 seconds to do 12 files. That would take care of your 14,000 in about 4 hours. I'm running Visual Studio 2010 on Windows 7 x64 with a dual core processor. Perhaps you can just use a faster computer?
Here's my full code, this is just a form with a single button, Button1, and a FolderBrowserDialog, FolderBrowserDialog1:
code :
Imports System.IO

Public Class Form1

Dim lstFiles As List(Of String) = New List(Of String)

Private Sub DirSearch(path As String)

    Dim thingies = From file In Directory.GetFiles(path) Where file.EndsWith(".doc") Select file

    lstFiles.AddRange(thingies)

    For Each subdir As String In Directory.GetDirectories(path)
        DirSearch(subdir)
    Next
End Sub

Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
    FolderBrowserDialog1.ShowDialog()

    If Not String.IsNullOrEmpty(FolderBrowserDialog1.SelectedPath) Then
        lstFiles.Clear()

        DirSearch(FolderBrowserDialog1.SelectedPath)
        Dim word As New Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.Application
        Dim doc As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.Document
        lstFiles.RemoveAll(Function(y) y.Contains(".docx"))
        Dim startTime As DateTime = DateTime.Now
        Debug.Print("Timer started at " & DateTime.Now().ToString & Environment.NewLine)
        For Each x In lstFiles
            word.Visible = False
            Debug.Print(x + Environment.NewLine)
            doc = word.Documents.Open(x)
            doc.Convert()
            doc.Close()
        Next
        word.Quit()
        Dim endTime As DateTime = DateTime.Now
        Debug.Print("Took " & endTime.Subtract(startTime).TotalSeconds & " to process " & lstFiles.Count & " documents" & Environment.NewLine)
    End If

End Sub
End Class

VBA in Word 2010 will not iterate over all open documents

wish help you to fix your issue Your documents go away when closed and removed from Documents during the For Each loop.
You want to iterate over the entire group, rather than from the beginning. Using For Each when you remove items causes some of the items to be removed prematurely which will consistently cause problems, as well as makes it hard to know what is going on from a code perspective.
code :
Sub Test()
    Set mydocs = Documents
    Debug.Print mydocs.Count

    For i = mydocs.Count To 1 Step -1
        Debug.Print Documents.Count
        mydocs(i).Close SaveChanges:=wdDoNotSaveChanges

    Next i

End Sub
