I hope this helps you . The approach you linked to in your question should work. But the message key you should use is for instance typeMismatch.org.joda.time.DateTime.
Even though you are not manually rejecting the value anywhere Spring will automatically know where to look for the message based on the rules described in the JavaDoc of DefaultMessageCodesResolver.

Any of those help You should use file messages.properites to declare specific information:
code :
typeMismatch.java.util.Date = Invalid date
  <bean id="messageSource" class="org.springframework.context.support.ReloadableResourceBundleMessageSource">
     <property name="basename" value="/WEB-INF/config/messages"/>
     <property name="defaultEncoding" value="UTF-8"/>

Joda DateTime Invalid format

seems to work fine This line DateTime now = dtf.parseDateTime(currentDate.toString()); isn't correct because you try parse date with default toSring format. You have to parse string which formatted the same way as pattern:
code :
DateTime currentDate = new DateTime();
DateTimeFormatter dtf = DateTimeFormat.forPattern("dd/MM/YYYY HH:mm").withLocale(locale);
String formatedDate = dtf.print(currentDate);
System.out.println(formatedDate);
DateTime now = dtf.parseDateTime(formatedDate);
System.out.println(now);

it helps some times When deserializing, by default, Jackson adjusts the dates to the context timezone. In your case, it's adjusting it to UTC (2017-10-03T00:00:00+01:00 is equivalent to 2017-10-02T23:00:00.000Z - the Z in the end of the String is the UTC designator).
To avoid this and preserve the input's timezone, you can disable the ADJUST_DATES_TO_CONTEXT_TIME_ZONE feature:
code :
objectMapper.configure(DeserializationFeature.ADJUST_DATES_TO_CONTEXT_TIME_ZONE, false);

like below fixes the issue The correct way is to use toDate()
The method in the DateTime class, even in old JodaTime, is the correct one. Here is an explanation:
