MarkLogic - SPARQL from Java

around this issue Choose a toolkit (e.g. http://jena.apache.org/).
Being a W3C standard, any client library should be able to work with any server. The level of compliance to the standards is rally quite high.

should help you out The cts:contains is focused to ?o, which only contains 'Approved'. That is why the sem:sparql is not returning results, not because you are using the cts query the wrong way.
(update..)
code :
xquery version "1.0-ml";

let $xml := <ContentVersion>
  <Name>Testing</Name>
  <Status>Approved</Status>
  <sem:triples xmlns:sem="http://marklogic.com/semantics">
   <sem:triple>
      <sem:subject>http://mycontent/content/Testing</sem:subject>
      <sem:predicate>is</sem:predicate>
      <sem:object>Approved</sem:object>
 </sem:triple>
</sem:triples>
</ContentVersion>
return xdmp:document-insert("/test.xml", $xml, (), "magician")
;

let $query := cts:word-query('Testing',"case-insensitive")
let $sparql := "PREFIX cts: <http://marklogic.com/cts#>
                DESCRIBE ?s
                WHERE{
                   ?s ?p ?o .
                   FILTER cts:contains(?o, cts:word-query('Approved'))
                }"
let $results := sem:sparql($sparql,(),("default-graph=magician"),($query))
return $results

like below fixes the issue Yes, there are definitely differences. Whether XQuery or SPARQL is most efficient however fully depends on the problem you are trying to solve. XQuery is best at querying and processing document data, while SPARQL really allows you to reason easily over RDF data.
It is true that RDF data is serialized as XML in MarkLogic, and you can full-text search it, and even put range indexes on it if you like, but RDF data is already indexed in the triple index, which would give you more accurate results than the full-text search of above.
code :
PREFIX pers: <http://my.persons/>;
PREFIX topic: <http://my.topics/>;
PREFIX pred: <http://my.predicates/>;
SELECT DISTINCT *
WHERE {
  ?person pred:likes topic:Chocolate;
          pred:friendOf+ ?friend.
  FILTER( ?friend = (pres:WhiteSolstice) )
  FILTER( ?friend != ?person )
}

To fix the issue you can do Which release of MarkLogic are you using?
Are you sure your app server is connected to the right database?

seems to work fine Full SPARQL 1.1, including MINUS, is on MarkLogic's roadmap and will be available in a release coming soon. MINUS is not supported as of 8.0-3.

I think the issue was by ths following , Yes, You can embed triples in both JSON and XML documents. This allows you to do things like do an and-query with some sparql based search constraints and mix it with other query constraints on XML elements.
This makes more sense if you understand fragments in MarkLogic and that each search query returns the fragments that match that query.
