Any of those help I found it. The main web site was originally a .NET1 application upgraded to .NET2 and after it, to .NET3.5.
In the web.config, there was one line, which breaks down some "new" features like the updatepanels. By removing this line, everything works fine.
code :
<xhtmlConformance mode="Legacy"/>

To fix this issue Set UpdateMode=Conditional and provide exclusive Triggers for the UpdatePanel.

will help you You're missing the code that's doing the update (the code that is called by the selected index changing within the dropdown); however, I'm going to venture a guess that your problem is being caused because you are loading the DDL through a control instead of programmatically.
The reason you may be running into this issue is because the page load function is called before the datasource controls are populated, which means that the DDL is not populated by the time you are looking for a value, thus your image is coming up with a blank.
code :
 Dim sTemp As String = "images/myimagenumber" & myDropdown.SelectedIndex & ".jpg"
 Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
     If Page.IsPostback = False Then
     End If

it helps some times UpdatePanels cause new elements to be placed in the page when they post back. It is no longer the same element so your bindings are not in place any longer. If you are using jQuery and are tying events together you can use their live API found here. Otherwise for things, such as datepickers, that fire once and fundamentally change the functionality of an item you need to fire some javascript once the new elements are loaded; all this requires is tying some javascript calls to a Microsoft provided call back function:
code :
function BindEvents()
    //Here your jQuery function calls go

var prm = Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance();
$(document).ready(function () {
    // Call BindDatePicker so that the DatePicker is bound on initial page request

    // Add BindDatePicker to the PageRequestManager so that it
    // is called after each UpdatePanel load
    var prm = Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance();

// We put the actual binding of the DatePicker to the input here
// so that we can call it multiple times. Other binds that need to happen to the
// elements inside the UpdatePanel can be put here as well.
var BindDatePicker = function() {
        showAnim: 'blind',
        autoSize: true,
        dateFormat: 'dd-mm-yy'

seems to work fine I have an UpdatePanel in which it contains a ListView. In the ListView, it contains another UpdatePanel. I wanted to add a new row inside the listview, meaning that the new row will have an UpdatePanel. But I'm getting the following error: , Solved by using ChildrenAsTriggers="true" in the parent UpdatePanel.
code :
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="updtPnlUser" runat="server" UpdateMode="Conditional" ChildrenAsTriggers="true">
