I wish this helpful for you document.getElementById returns null when a match doesn't exist. Also, null is falsy, so you can use it as a condition for if.
code :
var w = document.getElementById('w');
if(w){
  // element with ID w exists
}

I wish this help you I'd probably use nextAll:
code :
if (!thisTbody.nextAll('tbody[data-state]')[0]) {
    // It's the last `tbody` with a `data-state` attribute in its
    // enclosing table
}

it should still fix some issue It is not possible to declare such in TypeScript's type system: arrays must have a homogenous type1
In this case the array (Array) is of a homogenous c', where c' = A | B.
code :
[ A, Array<B> ]

hope this fix your issue You just need to do the checks you want inside this handler. Notice the class allows you to attach this only to the elements you want.
code :
var previousFocus = null;

$('.monitored').focus(function() {
  var previous = previousFocus ? 'object '+previousFocus : 'nowhere';
  console.log('focused on ' + this.id + ' coming from ' + previous);
  previousFocus = this.id;
});
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>

<div>
  <input class="monitored" id="inputA" name="inputA" value="inputA" />
</div>

<div >
  <input class="monitored" id="inputB" name="inputB" value="inputB" />
</div>
