will be helpful for those in need In the book Beginning Android 4 games development by Mario Zechner and Robert Green I am following along to start making a game of my own. We create a framework for the game first and then implement it into one class, and I got one error which I could not figure out. The error occured when I tried to instantiate something from a class called AndroidFileIO. , you should use
code :
    fileIO = new AndroidFileIO(this);

Hope this helps I think you meant for a good open source and free to use Gaming Engine for the Android Platform. Well there are many free and open source gaming engines now available, but they are still a work in progress. At the moment I'll recommend you to use AndEngine Gaming Engine for the Android.

like below fixes the issue As different Android APIs(ICS, JB, etc.) are released, they sometimes change the ADT (Android Development Tools) for Eclipse. The ADT is plugin for Eclipse. This plugin is what gives you all those neat buttons in the toolbar and the XML layout interaction.
The book you are reading was designed for Android 4.0(Ice Cream Sandwhich). As of right now, Google has released up to Android 4.2.2(JB 4.2). There has been some significant changes to the ADT going from ICS to JB, but in my opinion, they are for the good. Lots of really neat and new features. Here is a Google resource explaining the different API releases for Android: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/manifest/uses-sdk-element.html#ApiLevels

it fixes the issue For your first question: AndroidGame is an abstract class. This means it doesn't have to implement all methods of Game, as long as one of the classes extending AndroidGame does this. As you can see from the code, this is done in MrNomGame:
code :
public class MrNomGame extends AndroidGame {
    public Screen getStartScreen() {
        return new LoadingScreen(this);
renderView = new AndroidFastRenderView(this, frameBuffer);
public void run() {
    Rect dstRect = new Rect();
    long startTime = System.nanoTime();
    while(running) {

        float deltaTime = (System.nanoTime()-startTime) / 1000000000.0f;
        startTime = System.nanoTime();

        Canvas canvas = holder.lockCanvas();
        canvas.drawBitmap(framebuffer, null, dstRect, null);
