around this issue Set Width To Undefined
Adding a Label to a GridLayout is a special and annoying case. Discussed in the forums. Technically a “feature”, not a bug.
code :
myLabel.setSizeUndefined();
static public Label makeLabelSizeUndefined ( String caption )
{
    Label label = new Label( caption );
    label.setSizeUndefined();
    return label;
}
Label phoneLabel = WidgetHelper.makeLabelSizeUndefined( "Phone Number : " );

it should still fix some issue You can't add the same component more than once in a layout. You'll have to create new instances of TopicTitle, MinHr and Streams.

This might help you I would rekommend you to read the following chapter in the book of vaadin.
It will explain how you set fullsize on grids and individual rows and how individual rows and columns can have different spacings.
code :
GridLayout grid = new GridLayout(3,2);

// Layout containing relatively sized components must have
// a defined size, here is fixed size.
grid.setWidth("600px");
grid.setHeight("200px");

// Add some content
String labels [] = {
        "Shrinking column<br/>Shrinking row",
        "Expanding column (1:)<br/>Shrinking row",
        "Expanding column (5:)<br/>Shrinking row",
        "Shrinking column<br/>Expanding row",
        "Expanding column (1:)<br/>Expanding row",
        "Expanding column (5:)<br/>Expanding row"
};
for (int i=0; i<labels.length; i++) {
    Label label = new Label(labels[i], Label.CONTENT_XHTML);
    label.setWidth(null); // Set width as undefined
    grid.addComponent(label);
}

// Set different expansion ratios for the two columns
grid.setColumnExpandRatio(1, 1);
grid.setColumnExpandRatio(2, 5);

// Set the bottom row to expand
grid.setRowExpandRatio(1, 1);

// Align and size the labels.
for (int col=0; col<grid.getColumns(); col++) {
    for (int row=0; row<grid.getRows(); row++) {
        Component c = grid.getComponent(col, row);
        grid.setComponentAlignment(c, Alignment.TOP_CENTER);

        // Make the labels high to illustrate the empty
        // horizontal space.
        if (col != 0 || row != 0)
            c.setHeight("100%");
    }
}

wish helps you The answer was a combination of things. First the biggest tip I can offer is to look at Consume available space in Vaadin Gridlayout, but consider line breaks
After that the code above was using setCaption() when it should've been using setValue().

hope this fix your issue Solved it by adding a HorizontalLayout-wrapper for the left column containing the label. The right colum contains a VerticalLayout with all other components.
code :
    Label captionLabel = new Label(localized);
    captionLabel.setSizeUndefined();
    HorizontalLayout wrapper = new HorizontalLayout();
    wrapper.setSizeFull();
    wrapper.addComponent(captionLabel);
    wrapper.setComponentAlignment(captionLabel, Alignment.TOP_RIGHT);
    [...]
    gridLayout.addComponent(wrapper, 0, 0);
    gridLayout.addComponent(inputLayout, 1, 0);
    gridLayout.setColumnExpandRatio(0, (float)0.5);
    gridLayout.setColumnExpandRatio(1, (float)0.5);

may help you . As proposed by @Morfic I enabled the Server-Push addon in automatic mode and now the required updates to the client are made by that addon. Not sure how much I like that solution but it works.
