To fix the issue you can do The default font the user is seeing really depends on the browser and their own personal settings. If you don't care what font the user is seeing -- except that it is a sans-serif font, regardless of their system default, by all means just use font-family: sans-serif;
However, you can't depend on the defaults being specific fonts (Helvetica/Arial), as users can change them in their preferences. For a more uniform experience/design etc, it is better practice to specify your font.

I hope this helps . You are seeing an artifact of how the font is designed.
For example, if you use a serif font, the top-left serif on the "b" lines up with the left edge of the span, and so does the left edge of the "w".
code :
span {
  display: block;
  border: 1px dotted gray;
}
.ex1 {
    font-family: serif;
}
.ex2 {
    font-family: sans-serif;
}
b {
  display: inline-block;
  font-family: monospace;
  margin-top: 10px;
}
<div class="headline ex1">
  <b>Ex1:</b>
    <span class="head1" style="font-size: 84.7058823529412px;">be important</span>
    <span class="head2" style="font-size: 28.8px;">with a 1:19 professor to student ratio</span>
</div>
<div class="headline ex2">
  <b>Ex2:</b>
    <span class="head1" style="font-size: 84.7058823529412px;">be important</span>
    <span class="head2" style="font-size: 28.8px;">with a 1:19 professor to student ratio</span>
</div>

This might help you Apparently this was because my fonts were .pcf and you need .ttf to actually write with them. due to licensing issues, at least under Gentoo, there is no Helvetica available via the package manager.
My solution was to install media-fonts/liberation-fonts which is the Gentoo package for the Liberation Fonts. Liberation Sans is a fairly good stand-in for Helvetica.
code :
rcParams.update({
    'font.family':'sans-serif',
    'font.sans-serif':['Liberation Sans'],
    })

Hope this helps According to the pgf texsystem example, you need to use the "pfg" backend (mpl.use("pgf")) and choose the font you want to use:
code :
style = {
        "pgf.texsystem": "pdflatex",
        "text.usetex": True,
        "pgf.preamble": [
         r"\usepackage[utf8x]{inputenc}",
         r"\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}",
         r"\usepackage{cmbright}",
         ]
        }
ax.xaxis.get_major_formatter()._usetex = False
ax.yaxis.get_major_formatter()._usetex = False

fixed the issue. Will look into that further I always have text.usetex = True in my matplotlibrc file. In addition to that, I use this as well:
