it fixes the issue It seems everyone is asleep on the angularjs google group :) , you need
code :
app.directive('mySelect', function() {
    return {
        restrict : 'E',
        template : '<select><option>1</option><option>2</option></select>',
        link : function(scope, element, attributes, ngModelCtrl) {
            element.bind('change', function() {
                console.log("change !");
            });
        }
    }
});

help you fix your problem I read something here on stackoverflow that immediately jumped in my head when I read your post. It said something like "If you do it without a dot you are doing it wrong..." I'll search for the article and post it here as soon as I found it but for now I think I "fixed" your code:
code :
<div ng-app="app" ng-controller="Ctrl">
    <h1><span class="grey">$scope.data.text:</span> {{data.text}}</h1>
    <box spacing="large" box-type="rounded">
        <h2><span class="grey">$scope.text in box directive:</span> {{data.text}}</h2>
        <input ng-model="data.text" />
    </box>
    <box spacing="small" box-type="rounded-shadow">
        <h2><span class="grey">$scope.text in different box directive:</span> {{data.text}}</h2>
        <input ng-model="data.text" />
    </box>
</div>

var app = angular.module("app", []);

app.controller("Ctrl", ["$scope", function($scope) {

    $scope.data = {};
    $scope.data.text = "Starting Text... FOOBAR!";

}]);

app.directive("box", function() {
    return {
        restrict: "E",
        transclude: true,
        replace: true,
        scope: {
            spacing: "@",
            boxType: "@"
        },
        template: '<div class="box" ng-class="{\'spacing-{{spacing}}\' : spacing, \'box-{{boxType}}\' : boxType}"> <div class="box-inner" ng-transclude></div></div>'
    }
});

Hope this helps Relying on arbitrary function from directive's scope doesn't look like 'totally encapsulated', more like the opposite of it. And btw, you can't do that anyway.
Standard Angular approach is something like this
code :
app.directive('myDirective', function () {
  return {
    scope: true,
    transclude: true,
    template: '<div ng-transclude ng-mousemove="go()"></div>',
    link: function (scope){
      scope.go = function () { ... };
    }
  };
});

Does that help This would be a good time to use ngModelCtrl.$parsers instead of binding to keypresses manually. Try something like this in your link function:
code :
ngModelCtrl.$parsers.push( function (value) {
    // do some validation logic...it fails
    if (validationFails) {
        var prevValue = ctrl.$modelValue;
        ctrl.$setViewValue(prevValue); // set view
        ctrl.$render(); // render view
        return prevValue; // set model
    }

    // otherwise we're good!
    return value;
} );

Hope this helps It might help to understand more about why you want to achieve this, instead of just using?
code :
angular.
    module("Settings").
    directive("Settings", function SettingsDirective() {
        "use strict";

        return {
            restrict: "E",
            scope: {
                anonymous: "=",
                enabled: "=",
            },
            templateUrl: "tmpl/settings/settings-directive.html",
            controller: function(){}
        };
   });
