hope this fix your issue Absolutely. The urlparse module contains the parse_qs function, which takes the querystring and returns a dictionary:
code :
>>> urlparse.parse_qs('access_token=abcd1234abcd1234abcd1234&expires=86399')
{'access_token': ['abcd1234abcd1234abcd1234'], 'expires': ['86399']}

it should still fix some issue The Janrain OpenID Libraries are pretty good. They have a few quirks when it comes to extending them, but I think for your purposes they will be fine.
Facebook does NOT do OpenID. For Facebook you will need to use a different library (and that is something I have not done, so I cannot comment on it).

around this issue I had a similar problem, so I will share my findings with the hope that it would be useful to you or someone else dealing with the same issue.
Firstly, the registered domain for your app must match the domain you provide in your channelUrl. An important point to note here is that the following are not considered to be the same domains:
code :
`example.domain.com` and `example.domain.com:8080`.

like below fixes the issue From what I can tell, the oAuth tutorial I mentioned in my OP is outdated -- you no longer need any of that, you can use chrome.identity instead.
To be clear, there are a few things I had to do:
code :
STACK_APP = {
    id           : 1234,
    scope        : 'read_inbox,no_expiry',

    request_uri  : 'https://stackexchange.com/oauth/dialog',
    redirect_uri : chrome.identity.getRedirectURL("oauth2")
};

//ES6 template string!
var requestUrl = `${STACK_APP.request_uri}?client_id=${STACK_APP.id}&scope=${STACK_APP.scope}&redirect_uri=${STACK_APP.redirect_uri}`;

//https://developer.chrome.com/extensions/identity
//https://developer.chrome.com/extensions/app_identity#update_manifest
chrome.identity.launchWebAuthFlow({
    url         : requestUrl,
    interactive : true
}, function (url) {
    console.log('redirected to: ' + url);
});
OAuth with StackExchange API

OAuth with StackExchange API

With these it helps The StackExchange OAuth implementation is not meant to authenticate users to 3rd party applications but instead it is about authorizing those 3rd party applications to get access to the StackExchange API.
The access token that you get is not a token that represents a currently logged-in user, it represents the permission to access the API on behalf of the user gave it to your application. This is the classical confusion about the scope of OAuth 2.0 which is discussed in detail here: http://oauth.net/articles/authentication/.

it should still fix some issue Issue:
Stackexchange API, by default sends access token as application/x-www-form-urlencoded and tokenFormat of OAuth2 library expects JSON by default.
