fixed the issue. Will look into that further You're still going to need php or asp to query the folder for files. Javascript will not be able to "remotely" inspect the file system.
You can do something like the following in jQuery:
code :
$.ajax({
  url: 'getFolderAsArrayOfNames.php',
  dataType: 'json',
  success: function(data) {
    for(var i=0;i<data.length;i++) {
      // do what you need to do
    }
  });
});
echo "function "
     .$_GET['callback']
     ."() {return "
     .json_encode(scandir('somepath/*.jpg'))
     ."}";

wish helps you NodeJS has a full API for reading/writing files from JavaScript. I'm not aware of any mp3 libraries for it, though...
Edit: I assumed you meant JavaScript in a non-browser environment, but everyone else seems to be assuming you mean JavaScript in a web browser. If you do, then you'll struggle until/unless more browsers implement the various File APIs being created by the W3C. This article talks about those in some depth. There are very few browsers that have implemented the necessary APIs, though. Chrome may be the only one that lets you traverse directories.

fixed the issue. Will look into that further Use PHP or any other server side language to read the contents of the directory then output the required markup so that JavaScript can handle slideshow.
With PHP you will use scan_dir to read contents of a directory.

I wish this help you The method I found with a Google search uses HTML5 so if you are using a modern browser you should be good. Also the tutorial page seems to check if the browser you are using supports the features. If so you should be good to follow the tutorial which seems pretty thorough.

this one helps. Add the files as Resources - Files design elements. You can control public access for these design elements.
You can also use the CSS and Script Libraries design elements for this.
