wish help you to fix your issue In the xml you gave for your activity there's no nothing with the id 'starting_fragment' therefore nothing to replace, in the xml for the activity there needs to be a view/layout/fragmentContainer with the id 'starting_fragment'. Also you're a bit confused, the Id in the .replace() method represents the thing you're going to replace not the layout of the fragment
Simple fix
code :

Hope that helps I just fixed the issue! I was writing extends NavigationDrawer on all of my classes, and so when I changed it to extends Activity, that fixed the problem, and now everything is working smoothly. All set now.

help you fix your problem Okay i found an answer. The problem was that fragment cannot be a child of a 'Dialog'. Since i used popup dialog, it was unable to put fragments inside the dialog.
i solved by inflating views rather than using fragments in tablayout.

like below fixes the issue Your fragment1 is an Activity not a Fragment, and as the error says, it expects a Fragment. If you really don't want to change for it to extend Fragment, then launch it as an activity
