help you fix your problem map function's first argument should be a function and it should accept one argument. It is mandatory because, the iterable passed as the second argument will be iterated and the values will be passed to the function one by one in each iteration.
So, your best bet is to redefine f to accept one argument and ignore it, or write a wrapper function with one argument, ignore the argument and return the return value of f, like this
code :
from multiprocessing import Pool

def f():  # no argument
    return 1

def throw_away_function(_):
    return f()

print(Pool(2).map(throw_away_function, range(10)))
# [1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1]

may help you . See imap_fetchbody and imap_fetchstructure. Messages with attachments are multi-part messages; you can tell imap_fetchbody which part you want to fetch.

seems to work fine I can answer the first two question pretty quickly. I think you should be able to handle the third question after understanding the first two.

seems to work fine OR takes two arguments, neither more nor less. OR a b works, (OR a b) works but(OR a) won't work. That would be a single-argument OR inside a single-argument AND. The parser is looking for the second argument to OR when it runs up against the ) that ends the list of arguments to AND. The last part of your query is (OR (FROM a3@b.com SINCE 19-Oct-2018)).
What you mean is probably OR (FROM a1@b.com SINCE 1-Oct-2018) OR (FROM a2@b.com SINCE 10-Oct-2018) (FROM a3@b.com SINCE 19-Oct-2018). In that expression, the first OR takes two arguments, which are an AND and another OR, and the second OR takes two arguments, both of which are ANDs.

I wish did fix the issue. Nope, this is wrong -- you have a race condition in there which you will hit if another message arrives between the time you've APPENDed the message and the time you consult the number of messages.
You might want to use the UIDPLUS IMAP extension, if available, and consult the APPENDUID response code. If this is not available for some reason, your most reliable bet is sending a UID SEARCH command with one condition, a HEADER match for the Message-Id header of the message you've just appended. If you get none or more than one UIDs back, then you're screwed.
