Does that help you're specifying invalid id (contains space). I guess you meant "class" attribute, not "id". also the jQuery selector suggests it was supposed to be class ;)

it fixes the issue You are on the right track-- You need to pass the Date constructor numbers instead of strings (val will return strings). You can also leverage the params argument to your custom rule to make it a bit more extensible (not specific to three fields with specific ids):
code :
$.validator.addMethod("multidate", function (value, element, params) {
  var daySelector = params[0]
      , monthSelector = params[1]
      , yearSelector = params[2]
      , day = parseInt($(daySelector).val(), 10)
      , month = parseInt($(monthSelector).val(), 10)
      , year = parseInt($(yearSelector).val(), 10)
      , date = new Date(year, month, day);

  return (!$(daySelector).val() && !$(monthSelector).val() && !$(yearSelector).val()) ||
    !isNaN(date.getTime());

});

$(document).ready(function () {
  var dateFields = ["#passport-doi-1", "#passport-doi-2", "#passport-doi-3"];
  $("#dateform").validate({
    errorLabelContainer: "#errors",
    groups: {
      date: dateFields.join("")
    },
    rules: {
      "passport-doi-1": {
        multidate: dateFields
      },
      "passport-doi-2": {
        multidate: dateFields
      },
      "passport-doi-3": {
        multidate: dateFields
      }
    },
    messages: {
      "passport-doi-1": {
        multidate: "Please enter a valid date"
      },
      "passport-doi-2": {
        multidate: "Please enter a valid date"
      },
      "passport-doi-3": {
        multidate: "Please enter a valid date"
      }
    }
  });
});

may help you . I'm using jQuery.Validate to validate and submit my forms. , Well upon further study, this seems to work in the rules:
code :
rules: {
PONumber: {
    required: {
        depends: function(element)
                  {
                  return $("[name=paymentMode]:checked").val() == "purchaseOrder";
                  }
               }
           }
       }

help you fix your problem The validation isn't working because you only validate the email field in the participantRules method (by the way, the $id parameter is useless (not used) here). Also, you only call this method when send_to is equal to "participant".
code :
protected function participantRules($conferenceID){
    return [
        'email' => 'required|email'
    ];
}
protected function participantRules($conferenceID){
    return [
        'email' => 'required|email',
        'subject' => 'required',
        'message' => 'required'
    ];
}
$messages = [
    'email.email' => 'Your email is invalid',
    'email.required' => 'You must enter an email address',
    'subject.required' => 'You must enter a subject'
];
$this->validate(request(), $this->participantRules($id), $messages);
protected function participantRules($conferenceID){
    return [
        'email' => 'required_if:send_to,participant|email|nullable',
        'subject' => 'required',
        'message' => 'required'
    ];
}
