will be helpful for those in need nth-child() selects the particular element if it is the nth(in your case 2nd) child of the parent.
Here you need to use nth-of-type() that will select the element type (let's say p) if it is nth(in your case 2nd) of its type in its parent
code :
p:nth-of-type(2) {
  background: red;
<h1>This is a heading</h1>
<p>The first paragraph.</p>
<p>The second paragraph.</p>
<p>The third paragraph.</p>
<p>The fourth paragraph.</p>

I think the issue was by ths following , Here is a fork where every pair of rows is styled.
I had to edit the colour to see anything.

With these it helps this can't be done with css only if you are capable to use jQuery you might find this solution helpful.

I think the issue was by ths following , I think it's simply due to evolution of the CSS standard.
first-child is a CSS Level 2 selector nth-child is a CSS Level 3 selector

this will help Access the direct child of the ul elements like below using > for direct child selector

 ul#navmenu > li:last-child a  {border-right: none;}

 ul#navmenu > li:first-child a {border-left: none;}

 ul#navmenu > li:last-child {box-shadow: 200px 0px 0px 0px white;}
