it helps some times You can choose the correct overload of the DropDownList method from the list and use the one which suites your requirements. For example:
code :
@Html.DropDownList("filterApp", SelectListItems, "-- Select One --",
    new { @class = "form-control" })
<select name="filterApp" class="form-control">
    <option value="">-- Select One --</option>
    <!-- other options -->
</select>

wish of those help The root of your empty certType problem is due to a mismatch/typo in your setup.
code :
 self.addCert = function () {
   self.selectedCert(new Certification(self.availableCertTypes()[0]));
 }
 var CertType = function (data) {
   this.certTypeId = ko.observable(data.CertTypeId); //expecting uppercase property
   this.certTypeName = ko.observable(data.CertTypeName);
 }

self.availableCertTypes = ko.observableArray([
        {
          "certTypeId": 1, //data-bind and this declaration are both lowercase
          "certTypeName": "Certification"
        },
        {
          "certTypeId": 2,
          "certTypeName": "Training"
        }
    ]);
"selectedCertType":{"CertTypeId":1,"CertTypeName":"Certification"}
 <select id="CertificationType"
         data-bind="options: $parent.availableCertTypes,
                    optionsText: 'CertTypeName',
                    value: certType"
         style="width:100%;"></select>
 "selectedCert":{"certType":{"CertTypeId":1,"CertTypeName":"Certification"},"isEditing":false,"isValid":true}

around this issue I want to set the default value for the dropdown to be set to 1 (now it's not defined. I tried the below code, But it's not working. , You have a mistake you have written:
g-init= instead of ng-init=
code :
<div flex=5> <md-input-container>
    {{item.n_fold}}
    <input type="number" step="1" min="1"
        onkeypress="return (event.charCode == 8 || event.charCode == 0) ? '': event.charCode >= 48 && event.charCode <= 57"
    id="train_n_file"
    ng-init="item.n_fold= (item.n_fold || '1')"
    ng-model="item.n_fold"
    ng-disabled="item.train_select=='training_time_range'"
    style="margin-top: -2px;" class="input-div" value="{{1}}">
    </md-input-container>
</div>

wish of those help The defaultItem setting of the DropDown is used to add a filler in case no item is selected from the list, like "Select an item...".
To accomplish what you're trying to do try this:
code :
<kendo-dropdownlist
    [data]="listItems"
    textField="text"
    valueField="value"
    [(ngModel)]="selectedItem"
>

public listItems = [
    { text: "Option1", value: 1 },
    { text: "Option2", value: 2 },
    { text: "Option3", value: 3 }
];

public selectedItem = this.listItems[1];
