Does that help There is no ambiguity here, and you cannot return a list unconditionally.
In Perl 5, every expression, including a subroutine call, has a context, which is either list context (returning zero or more values) or scalar context (returning exactly one value). A return statement propagates the context of the subroutine call to the expression in the return statement. Let's suppose you're trying to return a list with several elements:
code :
return (6, 7, 8);
return @{[6, 7, 8]}
die "can't be scalar" unless wantarray;
return 6;

This might help you You do not have warnings enabled. In the print(...)[1] case, the set of parentheses are regarded as part of the function syntax.
code :
print (...) interpreted as function at C:\Temp\t.pl line 4.

Hope that helps If you have a list such as this in Haskell: , Slightly alternative version to Matt's approach
code :
import Data.List
import Data.Ord

leastFrequent :: Ord a => [a] -> a
leastFrequent = head . minimumBy (comparing length) . group . sort

I hope this helps . The type on the left of the initialization does not matter. The expression -2147483648 is interpreted by itself, independently.
Literal 2147483648 has no suffixes, which means that the compiler will first make an attempt to interpret it as an int value. On your platform int is apparently a 32-bit type. Value 2147483648 falls outside the range of signed 32-bit integer type. The compiler is required to use wider signed integer type to represent the value, if one is available (in the int, long int, long long int sequence, with the last one being formally available from C++11 on). But if no sufficiently wide signed integer type is available, the behavior is undefined
code :
warning C4146: unary minus operator applied to unsigned type, result still unsigned

this will help If the only escape format you need to handle is \x{1234}, then one way of handling this might be to match the escape sequence with a regular expression, then use chr(hex($1)) to convert a hexadecimal string to a character:
code :
my $x = 'JPMorgan Chase \x{0026} Co';
$x =~ s/\\x\{([0-9a-f]+)\}/chr(hex($1))/e;
say $x; # -> "JPMorgan Chase & Co"
