Hope that helps Yes, as per ECMA262 15.5.4.14 String.prototype.split (separator, limit), if the separator is not in the string, it returns a one-element array with the original string in it. The outcome can be inferred from:
code :
alert('paxdiablo'.split('.')[0]);
alert('pax.diablo'.split('.')[0]);
alert('pax.diablo'.split('.')[1]);

like below fixes the issue Use Python's regular expression module:
code :
>>> import re
>>> re.split(r'(\w+)', '(a1 b2 c3)')
['(', 'a1', ' ', 'b2', ' ', 'c3', ')']
>>> re.findall(r'\W+|\w+', '(a1 b2 c3)')
['(', 'a1', ' ', 'b2', ' ', 'c3', ')']
>>> re.split(r'([^\(\) ]+)', '(a1 b2 c3)')
['(', 'a1', ' ', 'b2', ' ', 'c3', ')']

should help you out This is one approach to match every short string in df14 with all possible matches in df12 and output them, including the short string as an index into the list to know which one matched the ones in df12:
code :
df1 <- c('I like stackoverflow very much today', 'I like stackoverflow much today',
         'I dont like stackoverflow very much today', 'I dont like you!',
         'What?')
df2 <- c('I like stacko',  'I dont like s', 'I dont like y', 'What?')

sapply(df2, function(x) df1[grepl(x, df1)])
$`I like stacko`
[1] "I like stackoverflow very much today" "I like stackoverflow much today"

$`I dont like s`
[1] "I dont like stackoverflow very much today"

$`I dont like y`
[1] "I dont like you!"

$`What?`
[1] "What?"

should help you out You can use a very simple ({[^{}]*}) regex matching {, zero or more symbols other than { and } with preg_split and PREG_SPLIT_DELIM_CAPTURE option (that will put all the captured subvalues into the resulting array):
code :
$str = '/part-of-{INTERESETINGSTUFF}/an-url/{MORESTUFF}';
$res = array_filter(preg_split('/({[^{}]*})/', $str, -1, PREG_SPLIT_DELIM_CAPTURE));
print_r($res);
// => Array( [0] => /part-of-  [1] => {INTERESETINGSTUFF}  [2] => /an-url/ [3] => {MORESTUFF} )

To fix the issue you can do I cant understand why this code snippet return an array on two strings "BEARING" instead of only a string "BEARING. Any ideas? , You need to use the global /g flag:
code :
const cleanedString = "ANGULAR CONTACT (ROLLING) BEARING"

const noun = cleanedString.match(/\b(\w+)$/g);
console.log(noun);
